On any given night, as many as 300,000 veterans are living in homeless shelters or on the streets across the United States.1 American veterans are twice as likely to become chronically homeless, due in part to lack of transferable military skills, unemployment, and combat related physical and mental disabilities that sometimes lead to substance abuse problems. 1 According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the number of homeless Vietnam-era veterans is now greater than the number of soldiers who died during the Vietnam War. During a 2013 survey, over 12% of veterans who have been homeless for more than two years reported suffering from frostbite on multiple occasions.2 This same survey found that veterans are far less likely to seek help at a shelter and were more likely to die on the streets than homeless non-veterans.2
Although we fully understand this is not the answer to America’s homeless veteran problem, this program is intended to keep those still in need alive until they can get the help they truly deserve.
100% of your donation will be added to our Project SOS by Black Star Surplus and used to purchase and distribute sleeping bags to the homeless through the organizations we work with. Donate to a homeless veteran today!
Although this program is designed for vets, others will benefit too. EACH and every donation made goes to distributing sleeping bags to homeless individuals across the country. Please read our full blog here!
